( We have to say, we had NO idea how dogs really “did it” )

We were not really planning to breed Willow just yet, but as you can see, sometimes when you are not looking things can happen really fast. So here’s the short version of the story….
Willow had just entered her heat cycle and being the responsible “parents” we decided to diaper Willow to prevent her from spotting around the house and to prevent Gromit from…uh….well, doing “Gromit Stuff.” Karin was in charge of “doggie sitting” and so was Elijah while I was out side blowing snow from the driveway. We had two sets of reusable diapers so one could be washed while Willow was wearing the other. Both dogs were in the living room ignoring each other so Karin took the opportunity to remove Willow’s diaper and replace it with the clean one that was in the dryer. In that short amount of time (about 30 seconds) Gromit somehow knew that Willow was “available” and when Karin returned from the laundry room, it was too late!
“Heat usually lasts between 2-4 weeks. Early in the cycle, a female dog may not be receptive to male dogs, although some are receptive through the entire cycle. It can be shorter or longer and you’ll know the cycle is over when all her vulva returns to its normal size and there’s no more bleeding or discharge. There’s a relatively small window when your dog is most fertile during the heat cycle; it may begin about nine or ten days after she goes into heat and lasts about five days. However, she can become pregnant until the end of the cycle.” American Kennel Club
